Slow walking as physical therapy

Tollgate Farm Park, North Bend WA

For people with Aphasia and mobility issues, regular exercise can be a challenge especially during a pandemic. A one-mile round trip walk on a level gravel path is a great way to escape from the Covid-19 prison we’ve all been experiencing. Wheelchair accessible with expansive views of Mt Si and the surrounding Cascade foothills, this 410-acre park also has a children’s playground, picnic tables and restrooms (which may not be open during the pandemic).

With Mt Si as a spectacular backdrop, Elizabeth paces herself past the hallway point of the walk. A week later, she may decide to reverse direction and have a different view during her walk. During the circuit she may stop to look at the friendly cows that are part of the park grounds. Creating her own physical therapy in a way, slow walking has helped Elizabeth maintain significant recovery after a stroke and two knee replacements.
